Since 2004, Tim Wolfred and CompassPoint’s transition consultants have offered intensive trainings for consultants and interim executive directors on best practices for working with clients in transition.

Executive Transition Management: A Workshop for Consultants
This intensive three-day training covers the protocols and tools that CompassPoint uses with its clients. Consultants receive electronic copies of CompassPoint’s transitions tool kit, which now includes over 170 items. First produced in 2004, this workshop now has been held in several cities across the country. Over 200 consultants have participated to date.  More information is available at www.compasspoint.org/etm.

Succession Planning for Nonprofits: A Workshop for Consultants
This is a three-day consultant training in succession planning with long-term executives. Participants will be provided a comprehensive Succession Planning Consultant Toolkit for taking clients through a succession plan. Becoming an Interim Executive Director
Nonprofit support organizations in several cities have contracted with CompassPoint to train interim executive directors in best practices for helping nonprofits renew themselves in the period between permanent leaders.

"Next Steps"—A succession planning workshop for long-term executives
In partnership with TransitionGuides of Silver Spring, Maryland, CompassPoint offers a workshop for founders and long-term nonprofit executives. Participants explore the critical and complex issues around succession planning and transition. This intensive two-day seminar provides a safe and confidential place to explore a variety of organizational and personal issues with executive peers and consultants. Executive directors and institutional sponsors can find more information at www.compasspoint.org/nextsteps.

CompassPoint has produced succession planning seminars for The Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Johnson Fellows of the Fannie Mae Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, the national training institute of the Rural Community Assistance Program, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation for Northern California, the Donors Forum of Wisconsin, and several others.

Following are training options that can be customized to fit your particular needs.

90-Minute Keynote Address A perspective on the sheer number of executive transitions in nonprofits, trends for the future, and what’s at stake for nonprofits and their boards. An overview of the ETM process, the steps most critical to success, and mistakes to be avoided.  Q & A. 50 and up $3,000 plus travel time & expenses
Half-Day Seminar The seminar will focus on an overview of the Executive Transition Management (ETM) process,  proven best practices, and tools to be used. Case examples will be included.  Participants will learn the critical steps necessary to achieving success with their executive transitions.

30 to 60 $5,000 plus travel time & expenses
One-Day Intensive Training Board members and senior nonprofit staff will gain the knowledge to potentially lead an executive transition process in their organizations.  The training will include hands-on practice with some of the tools in small group breakouts. Tim Wolfred will be assisted in the training by a second CompassPoint transition consultant. 12 to 24 $12,000 plus travel time & expenses

In each of the above packages, the event host has the option to buy copies of Managing Executive Transitions at a discount. Adding the book as part of the presentation gives participants a more in-depth understanding of the material and is a great take-away resource. The cost of books can be included in the workshop fee or books may be sold to participants at the event.

Author’s Training/Presentation Experience

Organization:    Leadership Ventures, Indianapolis, Indiana
Date:   June 1 to 3, 2009

Type of Event:   Three-day intensive training for veteran nonprofit consultants seeking to use the ETM model with their nonprofit clients.  Training curriculum includes extensive hands-on practice, including role plays, utilizing ETM tools with fictional clients.  Tim Wolfred was assisted by two co-trainers.  Nineteen consultant participants.

Notes:  Tim Wolfred created this consultant training in 2004 and has presented it ten times to groups of consultants in cities across the country.  References are available.  Participants consistently give the training a rating of 3.7 to 3.9 (on a 4 point scale) on an anonymous feeedback form.

Organization:    Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida, Jacksonville, Florida
Date: March 26-27, 2008

Type of Event:   Two-day training for veteran nonprofit leaders seeking to serve as interim executive directors for nonprofit organizations in transition.  Curriculum covered best practices that maximize the capacity building impact that a temporary leader can achieve.  Content based on Tim Wolfred’s monograph, “Interim Executive Directors:  The Power in the Middle.”  Twenty participants.

Notes: On an anonymous feedback form, the trainees gave the training a score of 4.9 on a 5 point scale.  This training has been provided previously in other cities. References available.

Organization:  Alliance for Nonprofit Management, 2008 Annual Conference, Dearborn, Michigan
Date: July 10, 2008

Type of Event:   Ninety-minute workshop on succession planning with organizations led by founders and long-term executives.  Fifty participants were consultants, funders, and managers working with community-based nonprofits.  Content based on Tim Wolfred’s monograph, “Building Leaderful Organizations: Succession Planning for Nonprofits.”
